What is unRAR? Well, RAR files is a compressed file format. Unlike ZIP files, which is automatically supported in Windows XP, to UnRAR in Windows XP means we have to download a small program to unpack the RAR files.
Here is the step-to-step instruction on download an unRAR program. I have chosen WinRAR (http://www.rarlab.com) as an example because I have used it since a long time ago and it has become the most popular program to use in unRAR files on Windows XP.
Windows XP UnRAR - Installation
- Download WinRAR from http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
- Once downloaded, install it into the default directory.
- During setup, be sure to select which compressed file types you want to associate with WinRAR.
- Under “Shell Intergration”, make sure option “Intergrate WinRAR into Shell” is selected. This will put WinRAR in the pop-up menu when we right-click a compressed file.
- After setup completed. We are ready to UnRAR in Windows XP.

- To unRAR a file in Windows XP, right-click on a RAR file
- A pop-up menu will show.
- Extract files - A extraction and option windows will show up. You get to choose where to extract the files inside the RAR file
- Extract Here - All files inside the RAR file will be extracted to the same folder as the RAR file
- Extract to example\ - A new folder will be created with the same name as the RAR file. For example, RAR file “example.rar” will be extracted to “/example/” folder
