Windows XP Fix Sector

Windows XP sometimes will not start properly. This might due to a damaged boot sector. In this time, what we can do is fix the Windows XP sector.

How to fix the XP Boot Sector

  1. To repair a damaged Boot Sector, first go to the command prompt
  2. In the command prompt, type FIXBOOT and press Enter.
  3. Then answer “Y” to confirm.

if fixing the boot sector does not work, try

Replace the damaged ntldr or ntdetect.com

  1. Copy a fresh copy of ntldr and/or ntdetect.com from original Windows XP Setup CD to a clean disket.
  2. Boot with the XP Setup CD and enter the Recovery Console. (see Windows XP Recovery Console on how to get to Windows XP Recovery Console)
  3. At the Command Prompt, type the copy command to copy the files to respective directories. COPY X:\i386\NTLDR C: COPY X:\i386\NTDETECT.COM C: where X: is drive number for disket.
  4. After copying, try restart the system.
